I have homeowners insurance - won't they pay for any damage I might get from my dishwasher leaking?

It depends on the company. Some companies only cover sudden leaks and bursts, not the slow and continuous leaks that account for over 95% of dishwasher leaks. If you are covered you will first have to pay your deductible (usually $500.00 to $1000.00), go through major inconvenience and run the risk of having your policy canceled. Because leaks can lead to mold and mold can lead to multi-million dollar claims and lawsuits, some insurance companies simply drop any clients who make a water claim of any kind.

Can I get mold from my dishwasher leaking?

Yes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends any water leaks be cleaned up within 24 to 48 hours after the leak starts to avoid mold growth. If you do not have anything under your dishwasher to alert you of a leak you could have serious problems by the time you find out. Mold only needs water, time, and porous materials to start growing, possible making your family sick and your home uninsurable!
